Our 2nd annual Jam ‘n Juneau Car Show is still part of the weekend long band jam and festival which was moved to the 3rd weekend in July and became the Jam ‘n Juneau Festival. The 1st annual Car Show was, by all accounts, very successful with 300 cars in attendance and many positive comments about the judging, trophies and food. The judging will still be done in teams with each team judging all vehicles within the class in a concourse style. The number of beautiful, large black-marble class trophies has increased as well as the number special trophies to a total of 147. There are 40 classes to compete in, paid judges, 300 dash plaques, door prizes, food, beer and soft drinks, a great mix of classic rock of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, an indoor craft show and flea market, an outdoor church service (8 AM) on the opposite side of the park, organized kids games throughout the day, several playgrounds in the park, a 50/50 raffle for cancer research and new this year will be an available Pancake Breakfast starting at 8 AM. The date is Sunday, July 20th. Gates open at 7:00 AM. Registration runs from 7:30 AM until 11:30 AM on a First Come- First Served basis (no pre-registration). Judged Vehicles cost $10. Show Only Vehicles cost $7. Judging starts at 9 AM. Awards will be held at 3 PM or sooner if possible. Festival and Car Show are held in Juneau’s beautiful City Park and will go on Rain or Shine. All Makes and Models are welcome with classes for everyone, including motorcycles (new this year). This year’s Car Show will feature a family owned 1970 Plymouth Superbird which was the 431st built out of 1,969 total US and Canadian bound cars. Of the 1,935 Superbirds built for the United States, this is one of the 618 which was built with a 440 4 bbl and automatic transmission. The researchers believe less than 1000 Superbirds are in existence today. The aerodynamic wars had started on the race tracks in the late 1960’s and NASCAR upped their homologation rules for racing in 1970. These rules required a certain number of cars be available for sale to the public in order for them to be raced. In 1969, the number of public cars was 500 (hence only 500 winged Dodge Daytona’s were built), but in 1970 when Plymouth got involved and produced the Roadrunner with the wing and aerodynamic nose for racing, the rules increased the number to one car per every two Plymouth dealerships in the country, which came to 1,920 vehicles. We are also trying to get several other Superbirds to attend. We may end up with the largest collection of Superbirds in the same place at the same time in quite a long time. There will be free admission for anyone bringing a Plymouth Superbird or Dodge Daytona to Juneau this year. The proceeds from the Car Show will go to local cancer research and is being put on specifically for the car owner’s enjoyment. As car owners ourselves, we have tried to eliminate all the negative things that sometimes occur at shows and implement as many of the positive things about our sport as possible. We hope to see you there. Directions: Take Highway 26 into Juneau. Take County Road DJ east 1 block to Fair Street and turn right (south). Go 1 block to City Park.
